The Society of Authors is a trade union for professional writers with over 7,000 members. The staff provide individual advice on all of the business aspects of writing, including the vetting of contracts. The Society also represents the writing profession by campaigning for improved terms and changes in legislation, such as copyright and libel laws.

If you write or work with books and want to join us, we welcome published and unpublished writers, agents and editors, and other people involved in publishing or connected to books.

The Historical Novel Society was founded in 1997 and aims to promote all aspects of historical fiction. Membership is open to all: they welcome anyone who is enthusiastic or curious about the genre. They offer support and opportunities for new writers, provide information for students, booksellers and librarians, and are a community for authors, agents and publishers.
