French Leave -
1992
Shy,
introverted Joe, 17, ‘runs away’ with his similarly disaffected grandfather
to France, where they revisit the sites of his grandfather’s wartime
experiences when he was just seventeen. They take Joe’s gypsy mate, Skemmer,
and meet an outgoing American girl on the boat. On the trip, Joe learns
more about himself and some of his grandfather’s tragic past, makes his first
relationship with a girl, and comes to terms with his uneasy family situation.
Wendy
says: This was inspired by a visit to a war cemetery in France when I read
the stones and saw that the young soldiers who died there were no older than my
own son.

Lizza
- 1987
Feisty
Lizza King, 14, sent away to work in the Bradford mills, goes through many
adventures before returning home and getting tangled up in the 1926 general
strike. A rites of passage novel which is still popular with British
library borrowers.
Wendy
says: See my adult novel, Land of your Possession,
which features Lizza as an adult. I couldn’t let her go!
