Singapore
Journey My
2002 novel, ‘The Long Journey
Home’ was inspired by the story of a young soldier from County
Durham who was a billeting officer for women internees at the Raffles
Hotel at the Liberation of Singapore in 1945. Before completing it, I needed to go to Singapore
and this is the story of my trip.

study of three novels that are historical in that the writers have used
historical scholarship and insight to drive their narratives and to call
up historical and psychological sensitivities in their readers.

Vienna
Recommended I
spent some time in the Eighties visiting friends in Vienna and became
interested in its role in fiction. I recently gave a talk on this and I
thought you might like to see my list of recommended books.

Arran
Journey When
Mary was seventy, she visited Arran and fell in love with its spiritual,
magical qualities. ‘I felt as though I was coming home,’ she says. She
moved house, lock stock and barrel to Arran, and has been there for the
last fifteen years. I went on a trip to Arran to meet Mary, and to
be "regressed".
